BYE BYE IKE

Earlier in the week, Hurricane Ike was projected to make a direct hit on Corpus Christi. Fortunately for everyone in South Texas, the path of the storm moved to the north as Ike got closer to land. Very early this morning, Ike came ashore at Galveston and is moving through Houston at the present time.

South Texas was lucky to be spared the high wind and rain that has been seen to the north of us. At the present time, we are in a critical part of our quail hatching cycle. There are many very young birds and nests on the ground. Neither of these would have done well under hurricane weather conditions.

Having gotten through this storm, I can say with confidence that we are going to have a very good quail season in South Texas. I have reports of at least three different sizes of adult or near adult birds. We are also seeing little birds that can't even fly. These are the result of the breeding activity after the rain that came with Hurricane Dolly in early July. Better make plans to come down.

  1. Your blog is an enjoyable read. I tune in regularly. However, your boasting of a better-than-better quail season comes at the expense of millions of fellow Texans living in Houston, Galveston, Bolivar Peninsula, Orange and many other communities situated along the Texas Gulf Coast. Of course, it's understandable to express relief at being spared the hand of Mother Nature but appalling to appreciate the storm's northern turn as promising a hunter's delight. Try writing more about booze.

  2. First, thanks for reading my blog. As to boasting about our season at the expense of others, I don't see your point. We were lucky to be out of the path of Ike and the effect on our season is in the hands of Mother Nature as always. I would never wish a hurricane on anyone or any place. I'm just reporting the facts here. Don't shoot the messenger. If you are looking for PC reporting on events, please check the Huffington Post. It might be more to your taste. I'll write about booze if you will drink some. Might help your 'tude.

  3. Apologies. Perhaps my post was a jigger too feisty. Happy to put the pistol away. Huffington Post does deliver, as does BBBB - still waiting on the booze though. Cheers.

  4. White flag up here too. Your comments caught me after a wine or three. Going out to California next week. Post from the wine country to follow. Cheers!

  5. Yes, more wine please. Wine goes great with quail.
